Biografie

Nigel Hall

Nigel Hall ist weltweit für seine geometrisch klaren und formal zurückgenommenen Skulpturen und Wandreliefs bekannt, die – auch im großen Format – stets eine poetische Leichtigkeit ausstrahlen. Die Erfahrung bestimmter Landschaften, Naturphänome oder musikalischer Formen übersetzt er in schleifenartig geschwungene Gebilde oder in variantenreiche Anordnungen aus Kreisen, Ellipsen und Kegeln, die uns ein subtiles Spiel aus Balance, virtueller Bewegung und optischer Veränderbarkeit vor Augen führen. Auch seine abstrakten Arbeiten auf Papier, die einen eigenständigen Bereich innerhalb seines Werks darstellen,. spiegeln sein vitales Interesse am Spiel mit der visuellen Wahrnehmung.

Nigel Hall, 1943 in Bristol geboren, studierte Mitte der 1960er Jahre am Royal College of Art in London und ging anschließend für zwei Jahre als Harkness-Stipendiat in die USA. Schon früh hat Hall regelmäßig weltweit ausgestellt. Er nahm u. a. 1977 an der documenta 6 in Kassel und 2019 an der Biennale in Venedig teil. Seine markanten Außenraumskulpturen sind vielerorts im öffentlichen Raum installiert und seine Werke gehören rund um den Globus zu den Sammlungsbeständen der renommiertesten Museen – etwa des New Yorker Museum of Modern Art, des Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, des Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney, des Musée National d’art Moderne in Paris, des British Museum, der Tate Gallery und des Victoria & Albert Museum in London oder der Neuen Nationalgalerie in Berlin. 2003 wurde Nigel Hall zum Mitglied der Royal Academy of Arts in London ernannt, wo er auch heute lebt und arbeitet.

Einzelausstellungen in der Galerie Scheffel ermöglichten in den vergangenen zwei Jahrzehnten Einblicke in verschiedene Werkphasen des Künstlers – und 2016 nahm er an der groß angelegten Eröffnungsausstellung der Jakobshallen teil.

2023 zeigt die Galerie Scheffel – im Jahr seines 80. Geburtstags – eine Einzelausstellung Nigel Halls in den Jakobshallen, die rund 40 Werke vereint: Skulpturen und Wandreliefs in unterschiedlichen Formaten sowie farbige Arbeiten auf Papier, darunter zahlreiche Werke, die Nigel Hall eigens für die Ausstellung entworfen hat.
